UK shoppers spent more online than anywhere else in Europe last
year - accounting for almost a third of all European sales.
According to new research from the Centre for Retail Research
(CRR) UK consumers spent £38bn online in 2009, an average of
£1,102 per shopper, which means that online sales now account
for almost 10% of total retail sales in the UK.
The new research also forecasts a further increase in internet
shopping, with total online sales predicted to hit £42.7bn in
2010.
It is thought that the recession has had a positive effect on
internet sales as shoppers look to compare prices before buying, as
well as a result of the fact that buying online can provide savings
of 20% or more.
The popularity of Ukash, which allows consumers to shop online
safely and anonymously using cash, has been increasing rapidly over
the last 12 months as shoppers look for convenient and secure ways
to shop online. Ukash now has more than 300,000 physical points of
purchase globally, with a large presence in the UK, Germany and
France - the three most prolific nations for online shopping,
according to the research.
